Going home

Bed rest at home.

We were excepting Ben to be in hospital for a few weeks or months  however after a week in hospital we were sent home. There was a major leak, and the consultant decided that Ben would be safer and more comfortable at home. She arrange for us to stay an extra night due to having an appointment with Doctor Seal. Then we were to be discharged home to continue bed rest.

Obviously we were very anxious and a little apprehensive about this because I worked long hours and Ben would be alone in bed all day with no assistance or reassurance. Anyhow we talked it though with the specialist midwife and Lorraine the mental health midwife. They reassured us and said what Ben can and can not do at home. How he will be comfortable, less likely to get infections and it will be more relaxing for him. So with this they set up a time to come and see Ben at home meaning he gets that support while I am at work and not left to just go home. This is important for him to have that contact and support at home too.

We then just waited to see Dr Seal and get all of Ben's medication he needed. Dr Seal came up as he just wanted to know what Ben had done and how he was. He looked at all his results and did bloods. Ben's urine had been test and swab taken over the last few days, as we were told he had a urine infection, then he did not. Told he had thrush and was given cream however then told again that he did in fact have a urine infection and the antibiotics he had already taken did not treat it. This was because it was a resistant type of infection that was susceptible to most antibiotic. Dr Seal told the midwives what antibiotic he needed so they get it from the pharmacy for Ben. He was told to continue with thrush cream just to help itching. Then to take these new antibiotics twice a day for 5 day. To continue his cyclogest pessaries and then he had to have a blood clot injection every night for for remainder of the pregnancy or at least 33/34 weeks while on bed rest. After they taught me how to give him these injections, we had everything and was free to go. upon discharge we were reminded to call Friday for swabs and blood results. (all came back negative when we did call back)

Tina came to collect us and drive Ben home. I had been home that day while Ben waited for Dr Seal, just to clean up and make sure the house was all ready for Ben to come home and rest. I went to Lidl to get him snacks and food that he could just eat and not have to make or cook while I was at work. We settled down to sleep. It was nice to be able to sleep in our own bed again after a week squashed up on the hospital bed. It was nice and warm and quiet. The cats had missed us and were cuddling up to Ben. So yes while it was anxious it was good to be home.

The next morning I was so worried, I made sure Ben had water, food, things to do all next to him. That he was comfortable and did not needed anything. It was the first day I was leaving him alone in the house while I went to work specially as it is a Thursday which means I would not be home until around 8 pm. I knew he would be just fine, well I kept telling myself this.

As the days and weeks went on, I got less worried and panicked when I had to leave for work. I got used to getting up early and moving Ben to the living room where he had everything he needed. Making him breakfast lunch and giving him the medication he need before I could go work. Then to come home to do what I had to, clean, cook and care for Ben before relaxing myself. It just became a routine. An exhausting one, yet worth it.
