Ben on hospital bed rest

The first few days in hospital

All about what it is like being on bed rest in hospital, I mean as you can imagine it can get boring, the first day was fine because of the surgery so it made the  time go faster, however come that first night it was a long one. We both did not get much sleep, from the nurses doing observation every 4 hours, as well as coming in to give Ben antibiotics, injections, pain relief we were disturbed a lot.

Then we had other people on the ward, per room there are 4 beds all curtained off. We were by the door which meant we got noise from the corridor, the other people next to us near the window had the blinds up and window open so we are freezing and it was not very dark to be able to sleep. The cleaners decided to come in to empty bins and turn all the lights on just before midnight. Also the women next to us was on the phone and facetime constantly to different people that I could re-tell her story almost word for word. How she wanted to go home because she was not having the baby before next week because she got tickets to see west life. (only 27 weeks and was having contractions)

Anyways other then that we managed to snuggle up on the bed and get some sleep.

The next day the doctors came round, she was lovely and reassured Ben that some of the pain and bit of bleeding was all normal. Told us to rest, also what excises for Ben to do in bed as his leg had gone very stiff and painful a bit. She explained what and when he would be given antibiotic and the blood clot injections. Along with any pain relief, as Ben was also suffering from headaches,  some mild cramps in his belly and his legs. This was all due to surgery, being under spinal anaesthetic as well as just generally being bed bound.

She had also arranged for us to have a reassurance scan, meaning we got to see our rainbow all happy and kicking. The baby looked so big when the sonographier showed us their heartbeat, their brain and spine. She showed us the babies tummy which was full of fluids, this was all comforting. She did have a little hover around to take a look at babies sex however as it is early she told us she can not tell us, but also rainbow was turning their legs in and wiggling so we would not be able to get a look anyways. Me and Ben said they are shy and obviously did not want us to know. Their feet where massive and giving Ben a good kick, although it was still early for him to feel these movements.

It is always so lovely to see our rainbow moving around healthy and happy inside, especially after the surgery just knowing they are all safe and going well was such a relief. It was just amazing to she her after having surgery. So below is the photo of the scan and also a video of the scanned heartbeat monitor and their fast strong heartbeat.

16 weeks & 1 day

Later that day we were able to move beds as the women mentioned before did go home. The nurse helped us move over to the window where there was a lot more room. I had a comfy recliner chair which I moved onto the left side, as Ben had to lay on his left. Which meant I could see and talk to him, as well as have more room to get up and get what he needed. His catheter had already came out, then later that day his canular in his hand and the patch on his stomach, which was place in surgery to relax the womb. This relieved his headaches a bit, due to the patch causing bad headaches

Tina also drove me to get some stuff for Ben, like his pregnancy pillow and a blanket, some books and food along with more clothes. This all made him feel a bit better and more comfortable. He got to get out off the ward for a bit to as his friend come and Vicky his cousin to keep him company while Tina drove me home. So I pushed Ben in a wheelchair downstairs to sit with them while I was gone.

That evening Austin, the specialist consultant, with Mel our midwife came to see how we were, they were confused that we were in this ward and that we be told we be here for so long. However on Monday when Ouma comes round we will know more. Until then we just have to rest and keep Ben entertained and comfortable.
